1 Samuel 25:19

Posted on 1 October 2025
Listen to this article

“And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.”

To better understand the significance of this verse, let’s provide some context by briefly summarizing the events leading up to it:

1 Samuel 25 tells the story of David and his interactions with a wealthy man named Nabal. Nabal was a harsh and selfish individual, whilst David was a fugitive at that time, fleeing from Saul, who sought to kill him. In the region of Carmel, David and his men had protected Nabal’s shepherds and livestock, expecting some form of gratitude or provision in return.

Now, focusing on 1 Samuel 25:19, this verse highlights a pivotal moment when Nabal’s wife, Abigail, takes matters into her own hands. Abigail is aware of the conflict that has arisen between her husband Nabal and David’s men. She understands that her husband’s actions have provoked David’s anger, and she decides to intervene to prevent bloodshed.

Abigail’s decision to act without informing her husband is noteworthy. It demonstrates her wisdom and discernment in recognising the dire consequences that could arise from Nabal’s offensive behaviour. By not involving Nabal in her plan, Abigail spares him from potentially exacerbating the situation further or being harmed in the process.

This verse also showcases Abigail’s willingness to take a leadership role in the absence of her husband’s good judgment. Her actions serve as an example of the important role women can play in times of crisis and their ability to bring about peace and resolution.

From a broader perspective, this incident in 1 Samuel 25 highlights themes of wisdom, humility, and conflict resolution. It shows that rash and selfish actions, like those exhibited by Nabal, can have severe consequences. Additionally, it demonstrates the value of wisdom and discernment in defusing volatile situations and promoting peace.
