1 Samuel 25:35

Posted on 2 October 2025
Listen to this article

“So David received of her hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up in peace to thine house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.”

Context:Before we dive into the specific verse, let’s briefly review the context of 1 Samuel 25. This chapter recounts an incident involving David, who was on the run from King Saul. David and his men were in the wilderness of Paran and had been providing protection for Nabal’s shepherds and flocks. However, when David sent messengers to request provisions from Nabal, he responded rudely and refused to help. In anger, David prepared to take revenge on Nabal and his household.

Gracious Response:This verse reveals David’s response to Abigail, Nabal’s wife, who had interceded on behalf of her household. Instead of carrying out his plan for revenge, David accepted the gifts Abigail had brought and graciously acknowledged her wise intervention. He declared that he had listened to her, accepted her as a person, and allowed her to return home in peace.

Lessons from the Verse:

  • Wise Intervention: Abigail’s intervention was wise and timely. She prevented David from making a hasty and unwise decision driven by anger. It teaches us the importance of seeking wisdom and acting in a thoughtful manner during moments of conflict or anger.
  • Humility and Grace: David’s response reflects humility and grace. Instead of stubbornly holding onto his plan for vengeance, he listened to Abigail’s counsel, accepted her person, and let go of his anger. It reminds us of the importance of humility and extending grace to others, even in challenging situations.
  • Resolving Conflicts Peacefully: This verse demonstrates the potential for peaceful resolution in the midst of conflict. Abigail’s actions and David’s response serve as examples of how conflicts can be resolved through wise intervention, listening, and extending grace. It encourages us to seek peaceful resolutions in our own conflicts rather than resorting to rash or vengeful actions.
  • The Value of Good Counsel: Abigail’s intervention provided David with wise counsel that saved him from committing a grave mistake. It highlights the importance of seeking and valuing good counsel when faced with difficult decisions or conflicts. Surrounding ourselves with wise and godly individuals can help us navigate challenging situations more effectively.

Application:

  • Seek Wisdom: In times of conflict or anger, seek wisdom from God and wise individuals before making decisions. Avoid acting impulsively or allowing emotions to dictate your actions.
  • Extend Grace: Learn to extend grace and forgiveness to others, even when they have wronged you. Let go of anger and bitterness, and seek peaceful resolutions.
  • Value Good Counsel: Surround yourself with wise and godly individuals who can provide counsel and guidance in challenging situations. Listen to their advice and consider their perspectives before making important decisions.
  • Be a Peacemaker: Strive to be a peacemaker in conflicts, seeking resolutions that promote peace and reconciliation. Look for opportunities to intervene wisely and offer guidance to others involved in disputes.
