1 Samuel 27:10

Posted on 2 October 2025
Listen to this article

“And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to‑day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.”

Context:Before we delve into the specific verse, let’s understand the context of 1 Samuel 27. This chapter takes place during a period when David was fleeing from Saul, who was pursuing him out of jealousy and fear. In 1 Samuel 27, David sought refuge among the Philistines, specifically with Achish, the king of Gath. Out of concern for his life, David made a deliberate choice to align himself with the Philistines.

David’s Deception:It is important to note that David’s response to Achish in this verse is not entirely truthful. David intentionally misleads Achish by providing false information about his military activities. He suggests that he has been attacking the enemies of Israel when, in reality, he has been attacking Israel’s allies, such as the Jerahmeelites and the Kenites. David’s purpose behind this deception was to maintain his favour with Achish and prevent suspicion from falling upon him.

Ethical Dilemma:David’s actions in this chapter raise ethical questions. As a chosen servant of God, one might question the morality of David aligning himself with the Philistines, who were enemies of Israel. Furthermore, his deceptive response to Achish may seem contradictory to his previous character as an upright man. This passage highlights the complexity of David’s situation and the difficult choices he faced while fleeing from Saul.

God’s Providence:Despite the moral ambiguity of David’s actions in this chapter, it is essential to remember that God’s plan was still at work. Although David’s choices might not align with God’s ideal, God’s providence was guiding the events in David’s life. Ultimately, God would use these circumstances to shape David’s character and prepare him for his future role as the king of Israel.

Lessons for Today:While studying this passage, we can reflect on the importance of seeking God’s guidance in difficult situations. David’s choices in 1 Samuel 27 were driven by fear and self‑preservation, which led him to make decisions that compromised his integrity. As believers, we should strive to trust in God’s providence, seeking His wisdom and guidance rather than relying solely on our own understanding or resorting to deceptive practices.

In conclusion, 1 Samuel 27:10 provides a glimpse into David’s life during a challenging period when he sought refuge among the Philistines. This passage raises ethical questions about David’s choices, but it also reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s guidance and trusting in His providence in our own lives.
