1 Samuel 27:6

Posted on 2 October 2025
Listen to this article

“Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.”

1 Samuel 27:6 is a part of the narrative describing David’s actions while he was fleeing from King Saul, who sought to kill him.

During this time, David found refuge in the land of the Philistines, specifically under the king named Achish of Gath.

David was concerned about Saul’s relentless pursuit and sought protection from his enemies.

Context:In this verse, we see that Achish, the Philistine king, grants David a city called Ziklag.

Ziklag became a significant place for David and his men, serving as a refuge and a base of operations.

It is important to note that Ziklag was originally a city within the territory of the tribe of Judah.

This verse raises a few key points that we can explore:

  • Divine Providence:Despite David’s challenging circumstances, God provided him with a place of safety in Ziklag. It demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His chosen servant even in the midst of trials. This highlights the principle that God can provide for His people in unexpected ways and use unlikely sources to meet their needs.
  • David’s Dilemma:David’s decision to seek refuge among the Philistines is a complex issue. While it offered him temporary safety from Saul’s persecution, it also put him in a compromising position. David had been anointed as the future king of Israel, and aligning himself with the enemies of God’s people seemed contradictory to that calling. This episode in David’s life serves as a reminder of the tensions and dilemmas faced by believers when navigating difficult circumstances.
  • Fulfillment of Prophecy:The verse concludes by noting that Ziklag “pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.” This statement highlights a historical detail indicating that Ziklag remained within the territory of Judah even after David’s time. It also suggests that the author of 1 Samuel wrote this account at a time when Ziklag was still under the control of Judah’s kings. This serves as evidence of the historical accuracy and reliability of the biblical narrative.

Overall, 1 Samuel 27:6 provides a glimpse into David’s life during his time of exile, showcasing both the challenges he faced and God’s provision for him. It reminds us of the complexities of human decisions and God’s sovereignty in working through difficult circumstances.
