1 Samuel 28:19

Listen to this article

“Moreover, the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and tomorrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.”

Context:Before we dive into the specific verse, it’s important to understand the context of 1 Samuel 28. This chapter recounts the story of Saul, the first king of Israel, seeking guidance from a medium, the Witch of Endor, in desperation, as he had been abandoned by God. Saul was about to face a major battle against the Philistines and was deeply troubled because God did not answer him through dreams, prophets, or Urim (sacred stones used for divination). Saul disguised himself and went to the witch to inquire about his future.

Message:In this verse, the medium, under the influence of a spirit, delivers a message to Saul from Samuel, who had already died. The message reveals that not only would Saul and his sons die in the impending battle, but Israel would also be delivered into the hands of the Philistines. The message is a confirmation of the judgment and punishment God had decreed upon Saul for his disobedience.

Theological Themes:

  • Consequences of Disobedience: The verse highlights the severe consequences of Saul’s disobedience to God’s commands. Saul’s disobedient actions had led to God’s rejection of him as king and his subsequent loss of divine guidance.
  • Divine Judgment: God’s judgment upon Saul and Israel is seen in the impending defeat at the hands of the Philistines. The Lord had warned Saul of the consequences of his disobedience, and now it was being fulfilled.
  • The Authority of God’s Word: The fact that Samuel’s spirit was able to deliver a message from beyond the grave emphasizes the authority and power of God’s word. It shows that even in death, God’s prophets continue to carry out His will and speak His truth.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Obedience to God:Saul’s tragic story serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God’s commands. Disobedience can have grave consequences and separate us from God’s guidance and blessings.
  • Seeking God’s Guidance:Instead of resorting to forbidden practices, like seeking the help of mediums or witches, we should seek God’s guidance through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking wise counsel from godly individuals.
  • Trusting in God’s Faithfulness:Even in times of adversity and judgment, we can trust in God’s faithfulness. Although Saul and his sons would face defeat, God’s plan for Israel would ultimately prevail, as He remained sovereign over the nation’s destiny.

Remember, when studying the Bible, it’s essential to read the verses in context and consider the broader themes and teachings of Scripture.
