1 Samuel 3:12

Posted on 6 February 2025
Listen to this article

“In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel records the transition from the time of the judges to the establishment of the monarchy in Israel. In chapter 3, Samuel, who would later become a prominent prophet and judge, is a young boy serving in the temple under the high priest Eli.

God’s Judgment on Eli’s House:In this verse, God is speaking to Samuel, revealing His plan to bring judgment upon the house of Eli. God had previously pronounced judgment on Eli and his descendants because of their failure to restrain and discipline Eli’s wicked sons, Hophni and Phinehas, who were priests serving in the tabernacle (1 Samuel 2:27-36). God had warned Eli that He would cut off his descendants from serving as priests forever due to their disobedience and irreverence.

Fulfillment of God’s Word:The phrase “I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house” indicates that God’s word would come to pass. God is faithful and will fulfill His promises and judgments. God’s judgment would not only affect Eli personally but also his entire family lineage.

Divine Sovereignty and Timing:The phrase “when I begin, I will also make an end” emphasizes God’s sovereign control over the timing and execution of His judgments. God declares that once He initiates His judgment, He will carry it through to completion. God’s timing is perfect, and His justice will be fully accomplished.

Lessons for us:

  • Faithfulness to God’s commands:Eli’s failure to address the sins of his sons demonstrated a lack of faithful obedience to God’s command to honour Him above all else. As believers, we are called to be faithful to God’s commands and hold fast to His teachings.
  • Consequences of disobedience:Eli’s house suffered severe consequences due to disobedience. This serves as a reminder of the importance of living in obedience to God’s Word and the potential repercussions of disregarding His commands.
  • God’s faithfulness and justice:The verse reminds us of God’s faithfulness to His promises and His just nature. God’s judgments may not always be immediate, but they will come to pass according to His perfect timing.
  • Accountability and leadership:Leaders, whether in a spiritual or secular context, have a responsibility to address wrongdoing and uphold righteousness. Eli’s failure to do so led to his own downfall and the judgment upon his household.

In conclusion, 1 Samuel 3:12 highlights God’s judgment on the house of Eli and emphasises His faithfulness, timing, and justice. It also presents important lessons regarding obedience, accountability, and the consequences of disregarding God’s commands.
