1 Samuel 3:17

Listen to this article

“And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide anything from me of all the things that he said unto thee.”

This verse is part of the narrative where God calls Samuel to be a prophet. Let’s explore its context and uncover the significance of this passage.

Context:During the time of 1 Samuel, Israel was under the leadership of judges, and the priest Eli served as the spiritual authority. However, the word of the Lord was rare in those days, and there were few visions (1 Samuel 3:1). Samuel, who was a young boy, served in the temple under Eli’s guidance.

In this particular passage, God calls Samuel by name while he is lying down in the temple. Samuel, not realizing it was the Lord speaking, mistakes the voice for that of Eli. After the third time, Eli realizes that it is God calling Samuel, instructs Samuel on how to respond, and encourages him to listen to the voice of the Lord.

Importance of Openness and Honesty:Eli’s words to Samuel in 1 Samuel 3:17 highlight the significance of honesty and openness when it comes to communicating with God. Eli tells Samuel not to hide anything that God has spoken to him. This underscores the importance of transparency in our relationship with God. We should approach Him with sincerity and share our thoughts, concerns, and experiences openly, without holding anything back.

Obedience to God’s Word:Eli’s statement is followed by a serious declaration, “God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide anything from me of all the things that he said unto thee.” Eli emphasizes the consequences of withholding information from God. It reveals the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God’s instructions. Samuel was called to be a prophet and to deliver God’s message faithfully. This verse highlights the seriousness of faithfully conveying God’s words and not distorting or concealing them.

Accountability and Spiritual Guidance:Eli, despite his own shortcomings as a priest and a father, recognizes the divine nature of the encounter Samuel had. He encourages Samuel to share the message with him, acknowledging that he too wants to know what God has revealed. Eli’s response demonstrates the importance of accountability and seeking spiritual guidance from trusted individuals who can help discern and understand God’s will. It also suggests that spiritual mentors play a vital role in helping others grow in their faith and discern their calling.

Application:The study of 1 Samuel 3:17 encourages us to cultivate a genuine and transparent relationship with God. We should strive for obedience to His word and faithfully communicate His message without distortion. Additionally, it reminds us of the value of accountability and seeking guidance from wise and trustworthy spiritual mentors.

Furthermore, this passage reminds us that God can call and speak to people of all ages, backgrounds, and positions. Just as Samuel was young when he was called, we too can listen attentively and respond faithfully when God calls us to fulfill a specific purpose or task.
