1 Samuel 3:20

Posted on 6 February 2025
Listen to this article

“And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord.”

Context:First, let’s understand the context of 1 Samuel 3:20. This verse is part of the narrative of Samuel, who was a significant figure in Israel’s history. At this point, Samuel was a young boy serving in the temple under the high priest Eli. In the preceding verses, we learn that God began to reveal Himself to Samuel and called him to be a prophet.

God’s faithfulness:This verse highlights the widespread recognition of Samuel’s prophetic calling throughout Israel. It signifies that God’s word to Samuel was not only for personal guidance but had broader implications for the entire nation.

National impact:The mention of “from Dan even to Beersheba” represents the northernmost and southernmost points of the land of Israel. This phrase emphasizes the extensive reach of Samuel’s prophetic ministry. It indicates that Samuel’s influence and message extended to all corners of the nation, unifying the people under God’s guidance.

God’s revelation:The fact that “all Israel” knew Samuel was established as a prophet signifies the divine authority behind his words. Samuel’s prophetic role was not self-proclaimed but established by God Himself. God had chosen Samuel as His representative and had entrusted him with the responsibility of delivering His messages to the people.

God’s desire for relationship:1 Samuel 3:20 also reveals God’s desire to communicate with His people. The chapter begins with the statement, “And the word of the Lord was precious [rare] in those days; there was no open vision” (1 Samuel 3:1). During a time when direct revelation from God was scarce, God chose to speak to Samuel. This highlights God’s faithfulness in raising up a prophet to bridge the communication gap between Himself and His people.

Application:From this passage, we can draw several practical applications for our lives. Firstly, we learn that God remains faithful to His promises. Just as He established Samuel as a prophet, God fulfils His plans and purposes in our lives as well. Secondly, we should be attentive and responsive to God’s voice. Samuel’s willingness to listen and obey paved the way for a fruitful relationship with God. We too should cultivate a sensitivity to God’s leading and promptly respond to His instructions.

The impact of our obedience:Samuel’s obedience and faithfulness to God’s call resulted in his influence spreading throughout the nation. Similarly, when we are obedient to God and walk in His ways, our lives can have a positive impact on others around us. Our commitment to following God’s guidance can lead to transformative effects in our families, communities, and beyond.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and consult various commentaries and study resources to gain a comprehensive understanding of the passage. May this study enrich your understanding of 1 Samuel 3:20 and encourage your spiritual growth.
