1 Samuel 30:26

Posted on 7 October 2025
Listen to this article

“But when David came to Ziklag, he sent of the spoil unto the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, Behold a present for you of the spoil of the enemies of the Lord.”

Context:This verse is part of the account of David’s actions after he and his men returned to their city, Ziklag, following a military expedition. They had been away, but upon their return, they discovered that their city had been raided and burned by the Amalekites, and their wives, children, and possessions had been taken captive (1 Samuel 30:1-5).

David’s Response:The verse begins with David’s arrival in Ziklag. Instead of immediately focusing on his own losses, David chooses to display a generous and gracious spirit. He takes a portion of the spoils captured from the enemies of the Lord and sends them as gifts to the elders of Judah and his friends.

Demonstrating Gratitude:David’s action reveals his gratitude towards God for the victory over the Amalekites and the recovery of their families and possessions. By sending presents to the elders and his friends, he acknowledges their support and shows appreciation for their friendship and assistance during his time as a fugitive.

Unity and Fellowship:David’s act of sharing the spoils with the elders of Judah and his friends fosters a sense of unity and strengthens the bond between them. This gesture promotes fellowship and reinforces their relationship as a community.

Recognition of God’s Role:David refers to the spoils as the “spoil of the enemies of the Lord.” This phrase highlights David’s recognition that the victory and the spoils were ultimately the result of God’s intervention and assistance. It acknowledges that their success in recovering their families and possessions was due to God’s favour and power.

Lessons to Apply:

  • Gratitude and Generosity: David’s example teaches us the importance of being grateful for God’s blessings and victories in our lives. We should cultivate a spirit of generosity and express our gratitude by sharing with others.
  • Community and Fellowship: David’s actions emphasise the significance of unity and fellowship within the community of believers. We should value and support one another, fostering strong relationships based on mutual encouragement, assistance, and love.
  • Acknowledging God’s Role: Like David, we must recognise that our victories and successes come from God. It is essential to acknowledge His involvement and give Him glory for His faithfulness and provision.

In summary:1 Samuel 30:26 showcases David’s gratitude, generosity, and his acknowledgment of God’s role in their victory. This verse serves as a reminder for us to cultivate a spirit of gratitude, promote fellowship within the community of believers, and always acknowledge God’s provision and involvement in our lives.
