1 Samuel 30:7

Listen to this article

“And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David.”

Context:This verse is part of the narrative in 1 Samuel that describes an incident when David and his men return to their town of Ziklag to find it burned down and their families, including David’s two wives, taken captive by the Amalekites. David and his men are greatly distressed. However, in the midst of this crisis, David seeks God’s guidance, and 1 Samuel 30:7 records David’s conversation with Abiathar the priest.

David’s request for the ephod:David, realizing the severity of the situation, seeks the ephod, which was a sacred garment worn by the high priest in Israel. The ephod was an essential part of the priestly garments and contained the Urim and Thummim, used for seeking God’s will in making decisions (Exodus 28:30). By requesting the ephod, David is seeking to consult God for guidance and direction.

Abiathar’s response:Abiathar, who is a priest and a descendant of Ahimelech, the former high priest, complies with David’s request and brings the ephod to him. Abiathar’s presence and willingness to assist David are significant because he is the only priest left after Saul had massacred the other priests at Nob (1 Samuel 22:16-20). David’s ability to access the ephod demonstrates his commitment to seeking God’s will, even in the midst of a crisis.

The significance of the ephod:The ephod symbolizes the spiritual authority and the ability to seek God’s guidance and direction. In this instance, David’s request for the ephod reveals his recognition of the need to seek God’s will and his desire to make decisions aligned with God’s plan. It highlights David’s dependence on God and his understanding that God’s guidance is crucial, especially in times of distress and uncertainty.

Application:

  • Seeking God’s guidance:David’s example teaches us the importance of seeking God’s guidance in all circumstances. When faced with difficult situations, seeking God’s wisdom through prayer and studying His Word can provide clarity and direction.
  • Trusting in God’s sovereignty:David’s request for the ephod also demonstrates his trust in God’s sovereignty. Despite the distressing circumstances, David turns to God, acknowledging that God’s wisdom and guidance are essential for making the right decisions.
  • Dependence on God:As believers, we are encouraged to depend on God rather than relying solely on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6). David’s act of seeking the ephod reminds us to depend on God in all aspects of our lives, recognizing that He is the ultimate source of wisdom and direction.

In summary, 1 Samuel 30:7 portrays David’s response to a crisis by seeking God’s guidance through the ephod. It teaches us the importance of seeking God’s wisdom, trusting in His sovereignty, and depending on Him in all circumstances.
