Listen to this article

"Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power."

Context:The book of 1 Samuel is situated in the Old Testament and primarily focuses on the transition of leadership in Israel from the period of the judges to the establishment of the monarchy. 1 Samuel 9 introduces us to the events leading up to the anointing of Saul as the first king of Israel.

The Man of Benjamin:The passage begins by introducing us to a man named Kish, who belonged to the tribe of Benjamin. In biblical times, the twelve tribes of Israel descended from the twelve sons of Jacob (also known as Israel). Each tribe had its own territory, and Benjamin was one of them. This tribal affiliation is important because Saul, who will be introduced later in the chapter, also comes from the tribe of Benjamin.

Kish’s Family Lineage:The verse further specifies that Kish was the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah. While the specific individuals in this genealogy do not play major roles in the narrative, this information serves to establish Kish’s ancestry and lineage. It demonstrates that Kish belonged to a notable family within the tribe of Benjamin.

Kish, a Mighty Man of Power:The verse concludes by describing Kish as a "mighty man of power." This phrase indicates that Kish was a man of influence, wealth, and strength within his community. It suggests that he held a position of authority or prominence among his fellow Benjamites.

Significance: This verse serves as an introduction to Kish, who is the father of Saul, the future king of Israel. By emphasizing Kish’s lineage and his stature as a powerful man, the verse sets the stage for the unfolding events that will lead to Saul’s appointment as king.

Application:While this verse may not contain direct teachings or moral lessons, it provides context for the larger narrative of Saul’s rise to kingship. It reminds us that God often works through specific individuals and their families to accomplish His purposes. It also serves as a reminder that positions of power and authority can be used to fulfill God’s plans and bring about His will in the world.

Overall, this verse serves as a foundation for the subsequent events in 1 Samuel and highlights the significance of Saul’s background and heritage as the first king of Israel.
