1 Samuel 9:20

Listen to this article

“And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house?”

This verse takes place in the context of the story of Saul, the first king of Israel, who was appointed by God through the prophet Samuel. Let’s explore the significance of this verse and its implications.

Lost donkeys found:At the beginning of 1 Samuel 9, we learn that Saul’s father, Kish, had lost his donkeys, and Saul was sent to search for them. After an unsuccessful search, Saul was about to give up and return home when his servant suggested seeking advice from Samuel the prophet. Before meeting Samuel, Saul learns from the verse that his father’s lost donkeys had been found. This detail might seem trivial, but it sets the stage for what is to come.

God’s guidance and provision:The fact that the donkeys were found serves as an encouragement and reassurance to Saul. It shows that God is aware of even the smallest details of our lives. In this case, it demonstrates God’s guidance and provision. It’s a reminder that when we seek the Lord, He can provide for our needs and direct our paths, even in seemingly mundane matters.

The desire of Israel:The latter part of the verse poses a thought-provoking question: “And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house?” This statement draws attention to the anticipation and hope that the people of Israel had for a king. The Israelites were looking for a leader to deliver them from their enemies and unite them as a nation.

Saul’s potential role:By asking this question, Samuel, speaking on behalf of God, hints at Saul’s potential as the chosen king. The people of Israel desired a king, and Saul’s appointment as king would fulfill their longings. This verse implies that Saul had a significant role to play in the history and destiny of Israel, highlighting his importance in God’s plan.

Divine purpose and sovereignty:The verse ultimately reveals God’s sovereignty and His divine plan for Saul. While Saul was initially searching for donkeys, God had a greater purpose for him. The seemingly unrelated incident of the lost donkeys was a means to bring Saul to Samuel and reveal his future as king. It demonstrates that God orchestrates events and circumstances to fulfill His purposes, even using seemingly insignificant occurrences to shape the course of history.

In summary:1 Samuel 9:20 showcases God’s guidance, provision, and sovereignty. It highlights how God used the recovery of Saul’s father’s lost donkeys as a means to bring Saul to Samuel, the prophet who would anoint him as king. This verse also emphasizes the anticipation and desire of the Israelites for a king and suggests that Saul had a significant role to fulfill in God’s plan for Israel.
