1 Samuel 9:3

Posted on 11 March 2025
Listen to this article

“And the asses of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel marks a significant transition in the history of Israel. It introduces the establishment of the monarchy in Israel, beginning with the story of Saul, the first king of Israel. Prior to this verse, the people of Israel had been ruled by judges, and there was a desire among the people to have a king like the surrounding nations.

The situation:In this verse, we learn that the donkeys belonging to Kish, the father of Saul, were lost. Donkeys were valuable animals used for transportation and work in that culture. This event serves as the catalyst that sets Saul on a path to meet the prophet Samuel, which eventually leads to Saul becoming the anointed king of Israel.

Symbolic significance:In biblical narratives, donkeys often symbolise humility and servanthood. They are associated with common people and simple tasks. The lost donkeys can be seen as a metaphor for Saul’s humble beginnings and unexpected rise to kingship. God uses ordinary circumstances to accomplish His purposes.

God’s guidance:Although the situation of the lost donkeys may appear insignificant, it is used by God to orchestrate a divine encounter between Saul and Samuel. Kish instructs Saul to take a servant and search for the lost donkeys. Little did Saul know that God had a greater plan in store for him. This passage demonstrates God’s sovereignty and His ability to work through ordinary events to bring about His will.

Lessons for us:The story of Saul’s search for the lost donkeys reminds us that God can use even seemingly trivial circumstances to fulfill His purposes in our lives. It encourages us to be attentive to God’s leading and trust in His guidance, even in situations that may seem mundane or unimportant. It also reminds us that God can bring unexpected blessings and opportunities from unexpected places.

Overall, 1 Samuel 9:3 highlights God’s providence and His ability to use ordinary circumstances for extraordinary purposes. It sets the stage for the unfolding narrative of Saul’s journey from a lost donkey search to becoming the first anointed king of Israel, ultimately teaching us to trust in God’s guidance and be open to His plans for our lives.
