1 Samuel 9:5

Listen to this article

“And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and take thought for us.”

In this verse, we find Saul:who would later become the first king of Israel, embarking on a journey with his servant in search of his father’s lost donkeys. Here are a few key points to consider in this passage:

  • Obedience and Responsibility:Saul was obedient to his father’s command to search for the lost donkeys. Despite being anointed as future king, he still acknowledged the authority of his father and took responsibility for fulfilling his father’s request. This highlights the importance of honouring our responsibilities, even in seemingly mundane tasks.
  • Diligence and Perseverance:Saul’s journey to find the donkeys demonstrates diligence and perseverance. He did not give up easily but pressed on, showing determination in fulfilling his task. Similarly, we can learn the value of perseverance and hard work in our own lives, understanding that even seemingly insignificant endeavours can have larger purposes in God’s plan.
  • God’s Providence:Although the verse does not explicitly mention God, it is important to note the underlying theme of God’s Providence in the narrative. God orchestrated events in such a way that Saul’s search for donkeys led him to encounter the prophet Samuel, who played a crucial role in anointing Saul as king. This reminds us that God works behind the scenes, guiding our paths and using even the smallest events for His purposes.
  • Humility:Saul, in his humility, acknowledges the concern his father may have for their well-being. He shows consideration for his father’s feelings and expresses the desire to return so that his father would not worry. This reflects a humble attitude and a respect for parental care. As we reflect on this verse, we can also examine our own attitudes and actions, seeking to cultivate humility and respect in our relationships.

These are some initial observations and lessons we can draw from 1 Samuel 9:5. It’s always beneficial to read the surrounding verses and explore the broader context of the chapter and book to gain a deeper understanding of the narrative and its implications.
