In 1 Samuel 19, King Saul’s jealousy and anger towards David continue to escalate. Saul instructs his son Jonathan and all his servants to kill David, but Jonathan, being a close friend of David, warns him about his father’s intentions. Jonathan speaks on David’s behalf to Saul, reminding him of David’s loyalty and righteousness, which temporarily pacifies Saul.
However, David’s music soothes Saul’s troubled spirit, and the evil spirit returns, causing Saul to throw a spear at David, who narrowly escapes. David flees to his wife, Michal, who helps him escape through a window. She then deceives her father, covering for David’s absence by placing an image in his bed to make it seem like he is there.
Saul sends messengers to capture David, but they are thwarted by the Spirit of God, which causes them to prophesy instead. Saul personally goes to Ramah, where David is staying with Samuel, and even he succumbs to prophesying in the presence of God. This happens to Saul three times, and each time he ends up prophesying.
