In 1 Samuel 21, David, who would later become king of Israel, is on the run from King Saul, who seeks to kill him out of jealousy. David arrives at the city of Nob and goes to the priest Ahimelech. He requests bread for himself and his men, but there is only consecrated bread available. The priest gives it to David, considering the need to be urgent.
David then asks the priest for a weapon, and Ahimelech offers him the sword of Goliath, whom David had slain earlier. David takes the sword and flees to the Philistine city of Gath. However, when the Philistines recognize him as the renowned warrior who killed their champion, David becomes fearful for his life and pretends to be insane before King Achish.
