In 1 Samuel 22, David, who was on the run from King Saul, seeks refuge in the cave of Adullam. Hearing of David’s location, his family and other distressed individuals join him there. David becomes their leader and seeks guidance from God through the prophet Gad. However, King Saul discovers that the priests of Nob assisted David, so he orders his soldiers to kill them. Although the soldiers hesitate, Doeg the Edomite, a servant of Saul, carries out the massacre, killing 85 priests along with men, women, children, and even livestock. One priest, Abiathar, escapes and informs David about the incident. David expresses remorse for unintentionally causing the priests’ death.
