In 1 Samuel 24, King Saul relentlessly pursues David, seeking to kill him out of jealousy and fear of losing his throne. While Saul is searching for David in the wilderness of En Gedi, David and his men find themselves in a cave. Unbeknownst to David, Saul enters the same cave to relieve himself. David’s men urge him to seize the opportunity and kill Saul, assuring him that it is God’s will. However, David refuses, respecting Saul’s anointed position as king and refusing to harm the Lord’s anointed.
Instead, David stealthily cuts off a piece of Saul’s robe, which causes Saul to be aware of David’s presence. David feels remorse for even cutting the robe, seeing it as a disrespectful act towards Saul. After Saul leaves the cave, David reveals himself and calls out to Saul, humbly proving his innocence and loyalty. David acknowledges that it is not his place to take revenge or harm Saul, leaving judgment in God’s hands.
David’s actions deeply touch Saul, who recognizes David’s righteousness and declares that David will surely become king. Saul asks David to spare his descendants and promises to cease pursuing him. David agrees and they part ways.
