1 Samuel Chapter 28

Summery

In 1 Samuel 28, we find the Israelites preparing to engage in battle against the Philistines. However, King Saul is terrified upon seeing the size of the Philistine army and seeks guidance from the Lord, but receives no answer. In desperation, Saul secretly visits a medium in Endor, who practices necromancy, to summon the spirit of the deceased prophet Samuel. Through the medium, Saul is able to communicate with Samuel’s spirit, who foretells the king’s impending defeat and death as a consequence of his disobedience to God. Samuel’s words cause Saul to fall to the ground in fear.

This chapter raises significant theological and ethical questions regarding Saul’s actions, as necromancy is strictly forbidden in the Hebrew Bible. It highlights Saul’s growing desperation and separation from God, as well as the consequences of his disobedience.
