1 Samuel 4 tells the story of the Israelites’ battle against the Philistines and the capture of the Ark of the Covenant. The Israelites were defeated in the first battle, and in an attempt to secure victory, they decided to bring the Ark of the Covenant from Shiloh into the camp. The presence of the Ark was supposed to symbolize the presence of God and bring them success.
When the Ark arrived, the Israelites shouted with great enthusiasm, causing the ground to shake and the Philistines to be afraid. However, the Philistines rallied their forces, fought against Israel once again, and this time, they won decisively. The Israelites suffered heavy casualties, and the Ark of the Covenant was captured by the Philistines.
The loss of the Ark was a devastating blow to the Israelites, and news of its capture reached Eli, the high priest, who was old and blind. Upon hearing the news, Eli fell backward, broke his neck, and died. The daughter-in-law of Eli, who was pregnant at the time, also heard the news and went into labor. She named her son Ichabod, meaning “the glory has departed,” signifying the departure of God’s presence from Israel.
