“And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.”
This verse is part of the account where David receives news of the deaths of Saul and his son Jonathan. Upon hearing of their demise, David mourns their loss and composes a lament known as the “Song of the Bow” in honour of Saul and Jonathan.
Context:Prior to this verse, an Amalekite man came to David claiming that he had killed Saul at the king’s request. The man thought he would receive praise and a reward from David for this act. However, David, being a man of integrity, mourns the death of Saul and Jonathan, and instead of commending the Amalekite, he orders one of his young men to execute him.
- Loyalty and Respect:David’s response to the Amalekite’s claim reveals his deep respect and loyalty toward Saul, despite the troubled relationship they had in the past. Despite Saul’s jealousy and attempts to harm David, David regarded Saul as the Lord’s anointed king and would not raise a hand against him. This act demonstrates David’s commitment to honour and protect God’s chosen leaders.
- Honoring the Dead:David’s reaction shows the importance of honoring the dead, even when their relationship was complicated. He mourns the loss of Saul and Jonathan, recognizing their contributions and the significance of their deaths for Israel. This serves as a powerful example of compassion, forgiveness, and the ability to see the good in others, even in difficult circumstances.
- Justice and Integrity:By ordering the execution of the Amalekite, David upholds justice and maintains his integrity. Although the Amalekite claimed responsibility for Saul’s death, it is likely that he fabricated the story to gain favour with David. However, David refuses to endorse or reward such deceitful behaviour. His decision reflects his commitment to truth and righteousness.
- Lessons for Believers:From this verse, believers can learn the importance of loyalty, respecting authority, and the significance of honoring the dead. Additionally, it emphasizes the need to uphold justice and maintain personal integrity in all circumstances.
