2 Samuel 13:10

Listen to this article

“And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.”

Context:2 Samuel 13 tells the tragic story of Amnon’s sinful desire for his half-sister Tamar and the subsequent events that unfold. Amnon, the eldest son of King David, becomes infatuated with Tamar, who is the beautiful sister of Absalom, Amnon’s brother. Amnon’s desire for Tamar eventually leads to a heinous act of rape.

Key Points:

  • The power of unchecked desire:Amnon’s desires for Tamar were lustful and sinful. Instead of controlling his passions and seeking what was righteous, he allowed his lust to consume him. This passage serves as a warning about the dangers of unrestrained desires and the consequences they can bring.
  • The perversion of family relationships:Amnon’s actions not only violated God’s law but also disrupted the harmony within his family. Tamar was his half-sister, and such relationships were strictly forbidden in the Mosaic Law (Leviticus 18:9). This event highlights the devastating effects that sin can have on relationships, particularly within the family.
  • Tamar’s innocence and obedience:Tamar’s response to Amnon’s request reveals her innocence and obedience to her brother. She dutifully prepares the food and brings it to him, unaware of his wicked intentions. Tamar’s actions demonstrate her trust in Amnon as her brother and her desire to serve him. Unfortunately, her trust is violated, and she suffers greatly as a result.
  • The consequences of sin:This passage sets the stage for the tragic events that follow. Amnon’s sin leads to a deep hatred and bitterness from Absalom, who seeks revenge for his sister’s violation. Ultimately, this incident fuels a series of events that results in Absalom rebelling against King David, leading to a period of great turmoil within the kingdom.

Guarding against unchecked desires:It is crucial to recognize and control our desires, ensuring that they align with God’s will. We must be cautious not to allow sinful desires to overpower us, leading us to act in ways that dishonour God and harm others.

Honoring family relationships:God’s design for family relationships should be respected and protected. We should strive to maintain healthy and godly relationships within our families, treating one another with love, respect, and purity.

The far‑reaching consequences of sin:Sin often leads to a chain reaction of negative consequences. Amnon’s sin not only brought personal ruin but also affected his family and the nation. We should be mindful of the ripple effects our actions can have and seek to live in obedience to God’s commands.

Overall, this passage serves as a sobering reminder of the destructive power of sin and the importance of pursuing righteousness, purity, and honouring God in our relationships.
