“So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.”

Context:2 Samuel 13 recounts the account of Amnon, David’s eldest son, and his wicked desire for his half-sister Tamar. Amnon was infatuated with Tamar and devised a plan to be alone with her. He feigned illness and requested Tamar’s presence while he pretended to eat the food she prepared.

Deception and Sin:Amnon’s actions reveal his deceitful and sinful nature. He pretended to be sick to manipulate the situation, disguising his true intentions to be alone with Tamar. Deception is a recurring theme in this story, leading to devastating consequences.

Forbidden Desire:The desire Amnon had for Tamar was against the laws of God. In Leviticus 18:9, God forbids sexual relations between siblings, and Amnon’s desire for Tamar was an affront to God’s commandments.

Abuse of Power:Amnon’s request to have Tamar prepare food for him was an abuse of power. As the king’s son, he used his position to exert control over Tamar, disregarding her feelings and well‑being.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Consequences of Sin:This account serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of giving in to sinful desires. Amnon’s actions had far‑reaching repercussions not only for himself but for the entire family.
  • The Importance of Honesty and Integrity:Deception often leads to further sin and harm. It is essential to cultivate honesty and integrity in our relationships, resisting the temptation to manipulate others for personal gain.
  • Respect and Honor:Amnon’s actions stand in stark contrast to how we should treat others. We are called to treat one another with respect and honor, valuing the inherent dignity of every individual.
  • Sexual Purity:This passage reinforces the biblical teaching on sexual purity and the importance of respecting boundaries. God’s Word provides guidelines for our conduct and relationships, and we should strive to follow them faithfully.

Overall, 2 Samuel 13:6 presents a sobering account of sin, deceit, abuse of power, and the devastating consequences that can result. It calls us to examine our own lives, pursuing righteousness, honesty, and purity, and treating others with respect and dignity.
