“And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto thy father’s concubines, which he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel shall hear that thou art abhorred of thy father: then shall the hands of all that are with thee be strong.”

Context:This verse is part of the account of Absalom’s rebellion against his father, King David. Absalom had conspired against David and gathered support from the people of Israel to overthrow him. Ahithophel was one of David’s trusted counselors, but he joined Absalom in his rebellion.

The betrayal of Ahithophel:Ahithophel advises Absalom to publicly sleep with his father’s concubines. This act would not only further humiliate David but also symbolize Absalom’s complete rejection of his father and claim to the throne. Ahithophel’s counsel demonstrates his total betrayal of David, as he joins the rebellion against the king he once supported.

Fulfillment of prophecy:Ahithophel’s advice aligns with the prophecy that Nathan gave to David after his sin with Bathsheba. Nathan had foretold that the calamity would come upon David from within his own household (2 Samuel 12:10-12). By sleeping with David’s concubines, Absalom publicly asserts his rebellion, thereby fulfilling the prophecy.

The power of public perception:Ahithophel recognizes the importance of public perception in consolidating Absalom’s claim to the throne. He advises Absalom to commit this act in such a way that it becomes known to all Israel. Ahithophel understands that if people perceive Absalom as being abhorred by his own father, their loyalty and support for him would increase. The hands of all those with Absalom would be strengthened, meaning their resolve and determination to support him would be reinforced.

Consequences of sin:This verse highlights the consequences of David’s sin with Bathsheba. David’s moral failure had far-reaching consequences, not only for himself but also for his family and kingdom. The rebellion of Absalom and the counsel of Ahithophel are part of the divine judgment against David’s transgressions.

Lessons for us:This passage serves as a reminder of the consequences of our actions. Our choices can have long-lasting effects, not only on ourselves but also on those around us. It is crucial to consider the potential impact of our decisions and strive to make choices that align with God’s will and principles.

In conclusion, 2 Samuel 16:21 portrays the betrayal of Ahithophel and his counsel to Absalom, advising him to publicly sleep with David’s concubines. This act symbolizes Absalom’s rebellion and strengthens his claim to the throne. The passage reminds us of the consequences of sin and the importance of making choices that honour God.
