2 Samuel 17:14

“And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the Lord had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the Lord might bring evil upon Absalom.”

Context:This verse is part of the narrative in 2 Samuel that describes the rebellion of Absalom against his father, King David. Absalom had gained a significant following and had positioned himself as a rival to David’s throne. In this particular verse, Absalom and his supporters are discussing the advice given by two of David’s trusted advisors: Ahithophel and Hushai.

The Wise Counsel of Ahithophel:Ahithophel was renowned for his wisdom and was considered one of David’s most trusted counselors. When Absalom sought advice on how to deal with David, Ahithophel provided counsel that was regarded as excellent and strategic. His plan involved pursuing David immediately with a select group of men to eliminate any opportunity for David to regroup and counterattack.

The Preferred Counsel of Hushai:Hushai, who was secretly loyal to David, deliberately offered an alternative plan to counter the advice of Ahithophel. Hushai suggested that Absalom gather a massive army and personally lead the charge against David. Hushai’s intention was to buy David more time to prepare for the impending conflict.

God’s Intervention:The verse reveals that the Lord had a purpose in the outcome of the counsel given by Ahithophel and Hushai. God intervened to ensure that Hushai’s counsel was accepted over Ahithophel’s. By doing so, the Lord aimed to bring disaster upon Absalom and fulfill the consequences of his rebellion.

Lessons to learn from 2 Samuel 17:14:

  • God’s Sovereignty:This verse reminds us of God’s sovereignty and His ability to intervene in human affairs. He can direct and manipulate circumstances to accomplish His purposes, even when it seems like human plans are prevailing.
  • Divine Wisdom:While Ahithophel’s counsel was regarded as excellent and well‑thought‑out, God’s plan superseded it. This highlights that human wisdom is limited and subject to the greater wisdom and purposes of God. We should seek God’s guidance and trust in His wisdom, even when it contradicts our own understanding.
  • Fulfillment of Prophecy:God had prophesied consequences for David’s sin, which included trouble within his own household (2 Samuel 12:10‑11). The rebellion led by Absalom was part of God’s fulfillment of that prophecy. This reminds us that God’s word will come to pass, and His plans will be accomplished, regardless of human actions.
  • Loyalty and Deception:Hushai’s loyalty to David is evident in his strategic advice to Absalom. It teaches us the importance of remaining loyal to those whom we have committed ourselves to, even in challenging circumstances. However, it is worth noting that Hushai’s methods involved deception, and the Bible generally discourages deception as a means to accomplish one’s goals.

Overall, 2 Samuel 17:14 provides insight into the workings of God’s providence, His ability to manipulate circumstances, and the fulfillment of His purposes. It also reminds us of the limitations of human wisdom and the importance of seeking God’s guidance in all our plans.
