“Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.”

This verse is part of the narrative during Absalom’s rebellion against his father, King David. In this chapter, David is fleeing Jerusalem due to Absalom’s pursuit and is seeking to gather support and advice from his trusted counselors and allies.

Historical Context:Understanding the background and context of this verse is crucial for interpretation. Absalom, David’s son, has revolted against his father and is attempting to overthrow him as king. David, accompanied by his loyal followers, is on the run, seeking safety and counsel.

Strategic Advice:In this verse, Hushai the Archite, a loyal friend and counselor of David, advises his supporters to quickly inform David not to spend the night in the plains of the wilderness. Hushai’s concern is that if David stays in that vulnerable location overnight, Absalom’s forces may launch a surprise attack and potentially annihilate David and all those with him.

Spiritual Lessons:While this verse primarily serves as a historical account, we can draw some spiritual lessons from it:

    • Divine Guidance:Hushai’s advice to David demonstrates the importance of seeking and heeding godly counsel. In times of trouble or uncertainty, seeking wisdom from those who are grounded in faith and have the knowledge of God’s Word can be invaluable.
    • God’s Protection:The verse reminds us that even in difficult circumstances, God can provide protection and safety. David, though facing a rebellion, had the opportunity to receive a warning through Hushai’s message. Likewise, God can guide and deliver us in times of danger or trouble if we are attentive to His leading.
    • Strategic Decision-making:Hushai’s counsel highlights the importance of strategic decision-making. Sometimes, taking quick action and making wise choices can prevent further harm or negative consequences. Trusting in God’s wisdom and seeking His guidance can help us make better decisions in challenging situations.
