“Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city: and a wench went and told them; and they went and told king David.”

Context:This verse is part of the account of the events leading up to Absalom’s rebellion against his father, King David. David’s trusted counselor, Ahithophel, had joined Absalom’s side, and Ahithophel’s counsel was highly esteemed. However, David, in order to gain time and assess the situation, sought the counsel of Hushai, another counselor. Hushai provided strategic advice to David to counter Ahithophel’s plan. In this particular verse, Jonathan and Ahimaaz, two spies, were stationed near a well called En-rogel, gathering information to relay to David.

The importance of reliable sources:Jonathan and Ahimaaz were stationed at En-rogel, a strategic location outside Jerusalem. Their task was to gather information about Absalom’s plans and report back to King David. The fact that a “wench” (a servant girl or a concubine) was the one who informed them suggests the need for discreet and reliable sources of information. It highlights the significance of having trustworthy individuals who can provide accurate and timely intelligence.

God’s provision and guidance:Throughout the account of David’s life, we see God’s faithfulness in providing guidance and support. In this verse, it is implied that the information relayed to Jonathan and Ahimaaz was orchestrated by God to help David. God can work through various means, even unexpected ones, to accomplish His purposes and provide for His people.

The value of communication:Jonathan and Ahimaaz went and told King David what they had learned. Communication played a crucial role in the unfolding events. It allowed David to stay informed, make strategic decisions, and navigate the challenges he faced. As believers, we should recognize the importance of clear and effective communication within our relationships, communities, and churches. Open and honest communication promotes unity, understanding, and cooperation.

Wisdom and discernment:David’s decision to send spies and gather information demonstrated his wisdom and discernment. He recognized the value of having accurate intelligence before making important decisions. This highlights the importance of seeking God’s guidance and using wisdom and discernment in our own lives. It is essential to gather all relevant information, weigh different perspectives, and seek godly counsel when making choices that impact our lives and the lives of others.

God’s sovereignty in challenging times:The events described in this verse take place during a time of crisis for David. Absalom’s rebellion threatened David’s kingdom and his very life. However, God remained sovereign throughout the situation. As believers, we can take comfort in knowing that even in the midst of our trials and challenges, God is in control. He can use both expected and unexpected circumstances to fulfill His purposes and bring about His plans.

In summary, 2 Samuel 17:17 emphasizes the importance of reliable sources of information, God’s provision and guidance, effective communication, wisdom and discernment, and God’s sovereignty in challenging times. By studying this verse, we can learn valuable lessons that are applicable to our own lives as we seek to navigate the complexities and uncertainties of life with faith and reliance on God.
