“And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given is not good at this time.”

Context:2 Samuel 17 takes place during the time when King David’s son Absalom rebelled against him and sought to take over the kingdom. In this chapter, Absalom is preparing to go to war against David, and he seeks advice from his counsellors, including Ahithophel and Hushai. Ahithophel, who was known for his wise counsel, gives his recommendation, but Hushai intervenes and offers a different perspective.

Key Themes and Points:

  • Counsel and Wisdom:The verse highlights the importance of counsel and wisdom in making decisions. Ahithophel was renowned for his wisdom and his counsel was highly regarded. However, Hushai disagrees with Ahithophel’s advice, suggesting that it is not suitable for the present situation. This demonstrates that even wise counsel should be carefully considered and evaluated in light of the circumstances.
  • Divine Intervention:Hushai’s intervention in offering a contrary opinion can be seen as a form of divine intervention. It is believed that God influenced Hushai to oppose Ahithophel’s counsel, ultimately protecting David’s interests. This highlights the idea that God can guide and direct our decisions, even in the midst of difficult situations.
  • Timing and Circumstances:Hushai’s remark about the timing of Ahithophel’s counsel emphasizes the importance of considering the specific circumstances and timing when making decisions. What may have been a good decision at one time may not be appropriate for another situation. It reminds us that discernment and wisdom are necessary to assess the suitability of advice in various contexts.
  • Loyalty and Strategy:Hushai’s action also reflects his loyalty to King David. By opposing Ahithophel’s counsel, Hushai strategically undermines the potential success of Absalom’s plan and buys time for David to gather his forces. This highlights the value of loyalty and the use of strategic thinking in navigating challenging circumstances.

Application:

  • Seek Godly Counsel:When faced with important decisions, it is wise to seek counsel from trusted individuals who have a relationship with God and possess wisdom and experience. They can provide valuable insights and help us discern the best course of action.
  • Discern the Timing:Consider the timing and circumstances surrounding a decision. What may have been appropriate in the past may not be suitable in the present. Pray for wisdom to discern the right time and approach for making choices.
  • Trust in Divine Intervention:Recognize that God can intervene in our lives, guiding our decisions and protecting our interests. Trust in His sovereignty and seek His guidance through prayer and studying His Word.
  • Loyalty and Strategy:Display loyalty to those in authority and consider strategic approaches to challenges. Acting with wisdom and integrity can have a positive impact on the outcomes we desire.

Remember, this Bible study provides a brief overview of the verse and its surrounding context. Further study and exploration of the passage, as well as consulting other resources and commentaries, can provide a deeper understanding of the biblical text.
