2 Samuel 18:18

Listen to this article

“And Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king’s dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom’s place.”

Context:The verse comes from the book of 2 Samuel, which records the life and reign of King David. This particular verse is part of the account of the rebellion of David’s son, Absalom.

Absalom’s Pillar:The verse tells us that during his lifetime, Absalom, David’s son, had erected a pillar for himself in the king’s dale. A pillar was a common way to commemorate significant events or people in biblical times. Absalom wanted to ensure his name would be remembered after his death, as he had no son to carry on his lineage.

Absalom’s Desire for Remembrance:The reason behind Absalom’s action is given in the verse. He felt a deep concern about his legacy, wanting to be remembered even after his death. Having no son who would continue his name, Absalom sought to perpetuate his memory through this pillar.

Absalom’s Place:The pillar that Absalom raised came to be known as “Absalom’s place” or “Absalom’s monument.” The verse notes that this name persisted until the time of writing, suggesting that Absalom’s pillar was still a recognizable landmark at the time the book of 2 Samuel was composed.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • The Quest for Legacy:Absalom’s desire for remembrance reflects a common human desire to leave a lasting legacy. While it is natural to want to be remembered, the Bible reminds us that true significance is found in our relationship with God and the impact we have on others through love, righteousness, and faithfulness.
  • The Consequences of Rebelliousness:The account of Absalom’s rebellion against his father, David, is a cautionary tale. Absalom’s ambition and desire for power led him to challenge his father’s authority, resulting in tragic consequences. It serves as a reminder that rebellion and selfish pursuits can have severe repercussions in our lives.
  • Seeking God’s Will:Absalom’s actions were driven by his own desires rather than seeking God’s guidance. As believers, we are encouraged to seek God’s will and submit to His plans for our lives. Trusting in God’s wisdom and following His ways leads to true fulfillment and a lasting legacy that aligns with His purposes.
  • Remembering God’s Faithfulness:While Absalom sought to ensure his name would be remembered, it is essential for us to remember and honor God’s faithfulness throughout generations. We should not focus solely on our own legacies but also on the enduring legacy of God’s love, mercy, and salvation. God’s faithfulness is the ultimate remembrance that brings true significance and eternal life.

Remember, a comprehensive study of the Bible should consider the surrounding verses, historical context, and the entirety of God’s Word.
