2 Samuel 19:32

“And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?”

Context:2 Samuel 19 is part of the narrative that follows Absalom’s rebellion against King David. After Absalom’s death, David mourns for his son, but the people of Israel long for his return as their king. In this verse, Barzillai, a wealthy and loyal supporter of David, meets the king as he returns to Jerusalem after his victory over Absalom.

Barzillai’s devotion:Barzillai had supported David during his exile from Jerusalem, providing him with provisions and aid. When David planned to return to Jerusalem, Barzillai offered to accompany him. However, Barzillai, being an elderly man, asks the king how much longer he has to live, implying that he may not be able to journey to Jerusalem and serve him there.

Barzillai’s humility:Barzillai’s question reveals his humility and recognition of his limitations. Despite his desire to accompany David, he acknowledges his age and physical limitations. He doesn’t presume or demand to be part of the king’s entourage; instead, he seeks clarity and guidance from David.

David’s response:In the subsequent verses, David shows gratitude to Barzillai for his support and offers him a place of honor in Jerusalem. However, Barzillai declines the offer and suggests that Chimham, his son, be given the opportunity to serve the king instead. David honors Barzillai’s request and rewards him for his loyalty.

Lessons from the passage:

  • Barzillai’s devotion:Barzillai’s unwavering support for David is commendable. It demonstrates the value of loyalty and friendship, especially during difficult times. We should be willing to support and stand by our leaders, friends, and loved ones when they face challenges or adversities.
  • Humility and self-awareness:Barzillai’s humility is a reminder that we should recognize our limitations and not overstep our boundaries. It is essential to seek guidance and be realistic about our abilities, especially when offering ourselves in service to others.
  • Gratitude and honoring others:David’s response to Barzillai teaches us the importance of expressing gratitude and honoring those who have shown kindness and support to us. We should acknowledge and reward the contributions of others, even if they may humbly decline or redirect the recognition.

2 Samuel 19:32 offers valuable insights into loyalty, humility, and gratitude. It encourages us to consider how we can support and honor those around us, and to approach our service with humility and self-awareness.
