2 Samuel 19:33

Listen to this article

“And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.”

Context:This verse is part of the narrative describing the events that unfolded after Absalom’s rebellion against King David. Absalom had usurped the throne and David was forced to flee from Jerusalem. However, with the help of his loyal supporters, David eventually regained control and returned to Jerusalem. Barzillai, an aged and wealthy man, had provided support to David during his time of exile.

Loyalty and Gratitude:

  • a. Barzillai’s support: Barzillai was a Gileadite who had come to David’s aid during his exile (2 Samuel 17:27-29). He had provided David with provisions and helped sustain him during his time of difficulty. This act of loyalty and support demonstrates the importance of standing with others in their times of need and being faithful to those we have committed to.
  • b. David’s gratitude: In return for Barzillai’s loyalty, David offers him a place of honor and provision in Jerusalem. David recognizes Barzillai’s selflessness and wishes to reward him for his kindness. This highlights the value of gratitude and acknowledging the contributions of others. It also encourages us to express our appreciation for those who have stood by us in difficult times.

Hospitality and Fellowship:

  • a. Inviting Barzillai to Jerusalem: David extends an invitation to Barzillai, urging him to come to Jerusalem and enjoy the blessings of being in the king’s presence. This invitation reflects the generosity and hospitality of David, who desires to share his wealth and provide for Barzillai’s needs. It demonstrates the importance of offering hospitality and fellowship to others, especially those who have been faithful to us.
  • b. Spiritual application: In a spiritual sense, Jerusalem symbolizes the presence of God and the community of believers. As Christians, we are called to invite others into the fellowship of Christ and share the blessings of a relationship with Him. Just as David welcomed Barzillai to Jerusalem, we should invite others to experience the love, grace, and fellowship found in the kingdom of God.

God’s Provision:

  • a. David’s promise to feed Barzillai: David assures Barzillai that he will be cared for and provided for in Jerusalem. This promise indicates David’s commitment to meet Barzillai’s needs and reflects the provision and care that God extends to His people.
  • b. Spiritual application: As believers, we can trust in God’s faithfulness to provide for our physical and spiritual needs. Just as David promised to feed Barzillai, God promises to be our provider and sustainer. We are encouraged to place our trust in Him and rely on His provision.

Overall, 2 Samuel 19:33 showcases themes of loyalty, gratitude, hospitality, fellowship, and God’s provision. It reminds us of the importance of standing by others, expressing gratitude, offering hospitality, and trusting in God’s faithfulness to provide for us.
