Listen to this article

“Now Joab was over all the host of Israel: and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites.”

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it is important to look at the broader context of 2 Samuel 20. This chapter recounts the rebellion of Sheba, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, against David’s rule. Joab, the commander of David’s army, pursued Sheba and besieged him in the city of Abel Beth Maachah. In the process, a wise woman intervened, convincing the people of the city to deliver Sheba to Joab. The rebellion was thus brought to an end.

Joab’s leadership:The verse highlights Joab’s position as the commander of all the host of Israel. Joab was a prominent figure throughout David’s reign and played a significant role in various military campaigns. His position as the commander of the army indicates his authority and influence in David’s kingdom. Joab was known for his military prowess and loyalty to David, although his methods were sometimes controversial.

Benaiah’s role:The verse also mentions Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, who was appointed over the Cherethites and the Pelethites. The Cherethites and the Pelethites were likely groups of elite warriors or bodyguards within David’s army. Benaiah’s position over these groups indicates his high rank and responsibility in the military hierarchy.

Lessons and applications:

  • Leadership and authority:The verse emphasizes the importance of wise and capable leaders in any organisation or community. Joab’s position as the commander highlights the need for strong leadership and strategic decision-making. As leaders, it is important to exercise authority responsibly and for the greater good of those under our care.
  • Loyalty and faithfulness:Joab’s long‑standing loyalty to David is evident throughout his service as the commander. Loyalty and faithfulness are valuable traits, and they contribute to the success and stability of any team or relationship. In our own lives, it is essential to cultivate loyalty and faithfulness towards God and those entrusted to our care.
  • God’s sovereignty:Although this verse does not explicitly mention God, it reminds us of God’s sovereign rule over the affairs of nations and individuals. David’s leadership, Joab’s position, and Benaiah’s role were all part of God’s providential plan for the establishment and governance of the kingdom of Israel.

In conclusion, 2 Samuel 20:23 highlights Joab’s leadership as the commander of Israel’s army and Benaiah’s role over the Cherethites and the Pelethites. This verse teaches us valuable lessons about leadership, loyalty, and God’s sovereignty.
