“Was he not most honourable of three? therefore he was their captain: howbeit he attained not unto the first three.”

This verse is a part of a passage that lists the exploits and mighty deeds of David’s mighty men, his most trusted and skilled warriors. The verse specifically mentions one of David’s elite warriors, named Eleazar.

Historical Context:During the reign of King David, he had a group of thirty-seven elite warriors known as “David’s Mighty Men.” These warriors demonstrated exceptional valour and faithfulness in serving the king and defending the kingdom.

Eleazar’s Position:In 2 Samuel 23:19, Eleazar is described as one of the most honourable of the three mighty men. It implies that he held a prominent position among David’s elite warriors and was highly respected for his bravery, leadership, and loyalty.

Not Among the First Three:The verse mentions that although Eleazar was highly esteemed, he did not attain the status of being among the first three mighty men. This suggests that there were three warriors who were even more distinguished and renowned than Eleazar.

Lessons from Eleazar:

  • Humility:Eleazar’s story teaches us the importance of humility. Despite his exceptional valour and status among the mighty men, he accepted his position and did not strive for recognition or position above what he had been assigned.
  • Contentment:Eleazar was content with the role he played as a warrior and did not harbour jealousy or envy toward those who held higher ranks. He faithfully fulfilled his duties, knowing that his contribution was valuable and meaningful in the service of the king and the kingdom.
  • Faithfulness:Eleazar’s commitment to his role as a captain reflects his faithfulness to his responsibilities. He faithfully followed the commands of his king and carried out his duties to the best of his abilities, proving himself to be a reliable and trusted warrior.
  • Application:As believers today, we can draw several lessons from Eleazar’s example:
  • Humility:We should cultivate humility and not seek recognition or position for ourselves. Instead, we should focus on faithfully serving God and others in the roles He has assigned us.
  • Contentment:It is essential to find contentment in our current circumstances and roles, trusting that God has placed us where He wants us to be. We should not compare ourselves with others or harbour jealousy or envy.
  • Faithfulness:Like Eleazar, we are called to be faithful in our service to God. We should diligently fulfil our responsibilities, knowing that even the seemingly small tasks can have significant impact when done for the glory of God.

In conclusion, 2 Samuel 23:19 highlights the honourable position of Eleazar among David’s mighty men, his humility, and his faithfulness. It serves as a reminder for us to be humble, content, and faithful in the roles God has assigned to us.
