Genesis 22:21

Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,

Genesis 22:21 (KJV)

This verse is part of the genealogy of Nahor, Abraham’s brother. It follows the account of Abraham offering Isaac and lists children born to Nahor by his wife Milcah. The list continues in the next verses, naming more sons and then Bethuel, who becomes the father of Rebekah.

The verse names three of Nahor’s sons: Huz (also spelled Uz), Buz, and Kemuel. Huz is called the firstborn, and Buz is called his brother. Kemuel is identified as the father of Aram. The text gives no motives or character judgments; it simply preserves names and family relationships.

The name Uz appears again in the book of Job, where Job lived in the land of Uz (Job 1:1). Buz is linked to Elihu, one of Job’s friends, who is called a Buzite (Job 32:2). Kemuel’s son Aram is not the same as Shem’s son Aram, from whom the Arameans descended. This Aram likely received the name because his family lived among or honored the older Aram, just as Jacob is later called a Syrian, meaning Aramean (Deuteronomy 26:5).

The placement of this genealogy after Abraham’s test shows that God’s purposes continued through Abraham’s extended family, even as the main story focuses on Isaac. The following verses mention Bethuel and then Rebekah, who becomes Isaac’s wife (Genesis 24). This list prepares the reader for the next major event in the family line.

A faithful response is careful attention. Readers should receive the record as written, avoid inventing details beyond it, and allow the surrounding genealogy to explain each person’s place. Such records establish continuity across generations and show that God works through specific people and their descendants.

This verse reminds us that God values ordinary family lines and historical details. Even a short list of names has a place in the larger story of redemption.
