Genesis 27:6
And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying,
Genesis 27:6 (KJV)
Context
Genesis 27 tells the story of Jacob and Esau, twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah. Isaac, now old and blind, plans to bless his eldest son Esau before he dies. Rebekah, who favours Jacob, overhears Isaac’s instructions to Esau and then speaks to Jacob, relaying what she heard and setting in motion a plan to secure the blessing for Jacob instead.
Meaning
This verse captures the moment Rebekah initiates her deceptive scheme. She had been listening to the private conversation between Isaac and Esau. Her words to Jacob reveal her partiality and her willingness to intervene in the matter of the blessing. God had already revealed to Rebekah that the older would serve the younger (Genesis 25:23), which may explain her conviction that Jacob should receive the blessing. However, the narrative emphasises that Rebekah chose to act through deception rather than trusting in God’s promise. Her plan, though aimed at fulfilling God’s revealed purpose, used dishonest means.
Biblical connections
God’s sovereignty is a key theme. Despite the deception, God’s plan and purpose were ultimately fulfilled. God had already declared that Jacob would be prominent, and His purposes prevailed even through flawed human actions. This does not endorse Rebekah’s methods, but it shows that God can work through imperfect people to accomplish His redemptive plan. The chapter as a whole illustrates the consequences of such deceit, including family conflict and estrangement.
Application
This passage serves as a caution against taking matters into our own hands through dishonest means. It reminds us to trust in God’s promises and rely on His sovereignty rather than resorting to deceit. Rebekah’s scheme strained the relationship between Jacob and Esau, leading to years of separation and conflict. This encourages us to strive for honesty, reconciliation, and healthy family relationships, dealing with conflicts in a righteous and open manner. Partiality and manipulation within families lead to harm.
Reflection
Genesis 27:6 invites us to reflect on the themes of trust, deception, consequences, and God’s ability to work through imperfect situations. It serves as a reminder of the importance of aligning our actions with God’s will and seeking His guidance in all circumstances. Human flaws and favouritism are real, yet God’s redemptive work continues. We are called to integrity and reliance on God’s promises, knowing that He is faithful even when we are not.
