Genesis 30:30

Listen to this article

“For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the LORD hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?”

This verse is part of the story of Jacob, who worked for his uncle Laban for several years. Jacob had married Laban’s daughters, Leah and Rachel, and had been tending Laban’s flocks. However, Laban had deceived Jacob multiple times by changing the terms of their agreement and taking advantage of him. In this particular verse, Jacob is speaking to Laban, expressing his dissatisfaction with the way Laban had treated him. Jacob points out that when he first arrived to work for Laban, Laban had very little, but now, through Jacob’s hard work and God’s blessing, Laban’s possessions had multiplied greatly. Jacob acknowledges that the increase in Laban’s wealth was a result of God’s blessing since Jacob’s arrival. Moreover, Jacob raises a concern for his own family. He questions Laban about when he will be able to provide for his own household. After years of service, Jacob desires to establish his own wealth and secure a future for his wives and children.

Jacob’s words highlight several important points. Despite the mistreatment Jacob endured, he acknowledges that it was God’s blessing that had caused Laban’s increase. Jacob recognizes that God was with him and had blessed him in his work. Jacob’s concern for his own household demonstrates the responsibility and care he felt towards his wives and children. It reflects the principle of providing for one’s family and highlights the importance of fulfilling our obligations towards our loved ones. Jacob’s words to Laban also reveal his desire for fairness and justice. He had worked diligently for Laban, and he felt it was time for Laban to honor their agreement and treat him justly.
