Genesis 31:2

Posted on 27 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before.”

Genesis 31:2 is part of the narrative about Jacob’s departure from Laban’s household. To understand the verse in its context, let’s explore the preceding events.

Jacob had been living with Laban for several years and had worked for him. During this time, Jacob had entered into a contractual agreement with Laban to marry his daughters, Rachel and Leah. However, Laban had deceived Jacob by giving him Leah instead of Rachel as his wife. Jacob had also experienced mistreatment from Laban, who constantly changed his wages.

In Genesis 30, we see that Jacob’s flocks had multiplied significantly, and he desired to return to his homeland. Sensing the growing animosity of Laban’s sons towards him, Jacob felt it was time to leave and go back to his family. This sets the stage for Genesis 31:2.

In this verse, it says, “And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before.” Here, “countenance” refers to Laban’s facial expression or his overall attitude and demeanor towards Jacob. The phrase “as before” indicates that Laban’s disposition had changed; it was no longer the same as it had been in the past.

This change in Laban’s attitude towards Jacob is significant. It reflects the deterioration of their relationship and sets the context for Jacob’s decision to leave. Laban’s treatment of Jacob had become increasingly unfavorable, and his true character had been revealed through various deceitful actions.

This verse can teach us several lessons:

  • The consequences of deceit:Laban’s deceitfulness towards Jacob ultimately strained their relationship. Deception can harm trust and create discord, leading to negative consequences.
  • God’s faithfulness:Throughout this narrative, God remained faithful to Jacob, protecting and prospering him despite Laban’s mistreatment. God’s faithfulness is a constant theme throughout the Bible, reassuring us that even in difficult situations, He is with us.
  • Recognizing changing relationships:Jacob’s observation of Laban’s countenance serves as a reminder to pay attention to the shifts in our relationships. Noticing changes in attitude can help us address conflicts, make amends, or even make decisions, like Jacob did, to move on from toxic environments.
  • God’s guidance in difficult circumstances:As the story continues, we see that God instructs Jacob to return to his homeland. This demonstrates God’s guidance in our lives, leading us out of challenging situations and towards His purposes.

In summary, Genesis 31:2 reveals a turning point in Jacob’s relationship with Laban. It highlights Laban’s changing attitude and sets the stage for Jacob’s decision to leave. The verse reminds us of the consequences of deceit, God’s faithfulness, the importance of recognizing shifting relationships, and the guidance of God in difficult circumstances.
