Genesis 31:29
It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
Genesis 31:29 (KJV)
Context
Jacob had served Laban for twenty years, and God had told him to return to his homeland (Genesis 31:3). Jacob left secretly with his wives, children, and flocks. Laban pursued him for seven days and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead. This verse records Laban’s words as he confronted Jacob.
Meaning
Laban admits, “It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt.” He knows he could harm Jacob and his family. But he also reveals that God spoke to him in a dream the night before, saying, “Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.” The phrase “either good or bad” is an idiom meaning “nothing at all.” Laban was forbidden from making any pronouncement, blessing, or curse over Jacob. This shows that God’s warning constrained Laban’s actions, even though Laban did not worship the true God. God’s direct intervention, as recorded in Genesis 31:24, came to Laban in a dream and limited his power.
Biblical connections
This event demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Human power is limited by divine authority; God can restrain even those who intend harm. The immediate context shows that Laban later proposed a covenant with Jacob (Genesis 31:44), turning aggression into a peaceful resolution.
Application
This verse reassures believers that God watches over His people and can intervene in the affairs of the wicked to accomplish His purposes. Even when others have the power to hurt us, God can speak into their circumstances and protect us. We can trust Him to defend us and guide our steps, just as He guided Jacob.
Reflection
Laban’s words reflect a mixture of fear, acknowledgment, and submission to God’s authority. He recognized the God of Abraham and Isaac and feared the consequences of disobeying His command. This reminds us that God’s plans are at work even in human conflicts. We are called to submit to His guidance, knowing that He is sovereign over every situation.
