Genesis 31:38

This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten.

Context

Jacob speaks these words to Laban after fleeing from him. Laban had accused Jacob of taking his daughters and his goods. Jacob answers by reminding Laban of twenty years of faithful service. He first worked fourteen years for Laban’s two daughters, then six years for the flock. During all that time, Laban changed his wages ten times, as Jacob later states in Genesis 31:41.

Meaning

Jacob declares that the ewes and she goats did not cast their young, meaning they did not miscarry. He also says he never ate the rams of the flock. This was not a small claim. A shepherd could easily take the best animals for his own food. Jacob’s refusal to do so showed his honesty. He did not steal from Laban even when Laban treated him unfairly. His words are a direct testimony to his faithful service and honest dealing.

Jacob’s care for the flock reminds us of the good shepherd who cares for the sheep. His faithful service under a harsh master also points to the patience and integrity that God honors.
