Genesis 32:27

Listen to this article

“And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.”

Genesis 32:27 records a significant event in the life of Jacob, one of the prominent patriarchs of the Old Testament. To better understand the significance of this verse, it is helpful to provide some context:In this chapter, Jacob is returning to Canaan after spending several years in Haran, where he worked for his uncle Laban.

On his way back, Jacob receives news that his estranged brother, Esau, is approaching with a force of four hundred men. Fearing for his life and the safety of his family and possessions, Jacob prays to God for protection and devises a plan to appease Esau.

Before encountering Esau, Jacob sends his family and possessions across the Jabbok River and remains alone on the other side. There, he wrestles with a “man” throughout the night. This mysterious figure is traditionally understood to be a manifestation of God or an angel representing God.

The wrestling match symbolizes Jacob’s struggle with his past, including his deceitful actions towards his brother and his encounters with Laban. During the intense struggle, the figure touches the hollow of Jacob’s thigh, causing him to limp.

Despite the pain, Jacob refuses to let go and demands a blessing from the figure. The verse in question, Genesis 32:27, contains the dialogue between Jacob and the mysterious figure. The figure asks Jacob, “What is thy name?” and Jacob responds, “Jacob.”

The significance of this exchange lies in the meaning of Jacob’s name. Jacob’s name in Hebrew, “Ya’akov,” derives from the root word “akev,” which means “heel” or “supplanter.”

The name reflects Jacob’s character as a heel-grabber or someone who takes advantage of others. Jacob’s actions throughout his life aligned with this meaning, particularly when he deceived his father Isaac to receive the blessing intended for his brother Esau.

By asking Jacob his name, the figure prompts him to acknowledge his true identity, his past actions, and the consequences they have had on his life. It is a moment of self-realization and confession for Jacob.

In Hebrew culture, a person’s name often carries significant meaning and can be linked to their destiny or character. In this case, Jacob’s acknowledgment of his name signifies a recognition of his past and an admission of his true nature.

This encounter marks a turning point in Jacob’s life. After acknowledging his name, Jacob receives a new name, Israel, which means “he strives with God” or “God strives.”

This name change signifies a transformation in Jacob’s character and his relationship with God. It symbolizes his transition from a deceitful supplanter to a man who wrestles with God and seeks His blessing.

In summary, Genesis 32:27 captures a pivotal moment in Jacob’s life. The dialogue between Jacob and the mysterious figure highlights Jacob’s self-realization and confession as he acknowledges his name.
