Genesis 34:10

Posted on 28 July 2023
Listen to this article

And ye shall dwell with vs, and the land shall be before you: dwell and trade you therein, and get you possessions therein. Genesis 34:10 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of the incident involving Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, and Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite. After Shechem raped Dinah, he developed strong feelings for her and desired to marry her. In Genesis 34:8-10, Hamor the father of Shechem approached Jacob to negotiate a marriage arrangement.

In this verse Hamor proposes that Jacob’s family should dwell with them in their land. He offers the land to Jacob’s sons, inviting them to live, trade, and acquire possessions there. It is important to note that Hamor was seeking to secure the marriage between Shechem and Dinah and was willing to make concessions to achieve that goal.

From a biblical perspective, Genesis 34 serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of deceit, revenge, and the failure to honor God’s commands. In this chapter we see how Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, deceived Shechem and his people by suggesting that they would agree to the marriage proposal if all the men of the city were circumcised. While Shechem and Hamor convinced the men of their city to undergo circumcision, Simeon and Levi took advantage of their vulnerability and killed them in revenge for Dinah’s violation.

This story highlights the importance of integrity, honesty, and honoring one’s commitments. Jacob’s sons used deceit as a means to carry out their vengeance, which ultimately led to negative consequences for their family and tarnished their reputation. Additionally, the narrative underscores the significance of obeying God’s commandments rather than resorting to acts of violence or seeking personal revenge.

Genesis 34:10 reveals Hamor’s proposal to Jacob’s family, inviting them to dwell, trade, and acquire possessions in their land. The verse is part of a larger story that serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of deceit, revenge, and the importance of honoring God’s commands.
