Genesis 34:18

Listen to this article

"And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor’s son."

Genesis 34:18 is a verse from the book of Genesis:which is the first book of the Bible and provides an account of the origins of the world, humanity, and the early history of God’s chosen people. This particular verse is part of the narrative in which Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, is involved in a controversial incident with Shechem, a prince of the city of Shechem.

To understand the context:of Genesis 34:18, let’s look at the broader story in Genesis 34. After Shechem, the son of Hamor, rapes Dinah, he becomes infatuated with her and desires to marry her. Shechem and his father Hamor approach Jacob, Dinah’s father, and propose a marriage alliance between the two families. The verse you mentioned captures the response of Hamor and Shechem to the proposal made by Jacob’s sons.

In this verse:it is stated that the words of Jacob’s sons pleased Hamor and Shechem. The subsequent verses reveal that the sons of Jacob had ulterior motives. They proposed that Shechem and all the men of the city must be circumcised before Dinah could be given to Shechem in marriage. They intended to take revenge for the defilement of their sister.

The verse:serves to show that Hamor and Shechem were agreeable to the condition put forth by Jacob’s sons. However, as the story progresses, it becomes apparent that the sons of Jacob had deceit in their hearts, and their plan ultimately leads to the massacre of the men of Shechem by Simeon and Levi.

Genesis 34 is a complex passage:that raises various ethical and moral questions. It presents a narrative about intercultural relationships, honor, revenge, and the consequences of deceit and violence. The story highlights the importance of maintaining integrity, honesty, and respect for others in our interactions.

It is important to read this passage:in its entirety and consider its implications within the broader context of the book of Genesis and the Bible as a whole.
