Genesis 37:9

Listen to this article

"And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me."

This verse is part of the narrative of Joseph’s dreams in the book of Genesis. Joseph was the son of Jacob and Rachel, and he was favoured by his father. His dreams played a significant role in his life and in the overall story of the Israelite people.

In this particular dream, Joseph sees the sun, the moon, and eleven stars bowing down to him. This dream symbolises Joseph’s future prominence and authority over his family. The sun and the moon represent Joseph’s parents, Jacob and Rachel, while the eleven stars symbolise Joseph’s eleven brothers. The dream suggests that one day Joseph would have authority over his entire family.

This dream, along with Joseph’s other dreams, caused jealousy and animosity among his brothers. They saw the dreams as a sign of Joseph’s arrogance and superiority. Their resentment ultimately led to Joseph being sold into slavery by his own brothers.

While the dream itself seemed to be a divine revelation, it is important to note that dreams in the Bible can carry symbolic meanings, and they were often used by God to convey messages or foreshadow future events. In Joseph’s case, his dreams were a part of God’s plan to position him in a place of authority and fulfil a greater purpose.

As the story unfolds, Joseph’s journey takes him from being a slave in Egypt to becoming a powerful ruler. Through his position, Joseph is able to save his family and the people of Egypt from a severe famine. The dreams that initially caused strife among his family members were ultimately fulfilled as Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt and bowed before him, seeking his help.

Genesis 37:9 serves as a pivotal point in Joseph’s story, foreshadowing the events that would unfold and highlighting the fulfilment of God’s plan in his life. It also emphasises the themes of God’s sovereignty, the testing of character, and the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation.

Overall, this verse reminds us of God’s ability to use even challenging and difficult circumstances to bring about His purposes and fulfil His promises in the lives of His people.
