Genesis 37:10

Posted on 28 July 2023
Listen to this article

"And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?"

This verse is part of the story of Joseph, who was one of the twelve sons of Jacob (Israel). Joseph was favoured by his father, which created jealousy and resentment among his brothers. Joseph had a series of dreams that indicated his future prominence over his brothers and even his parents. Genesis 37:10:focuses on the reaction of Jacob (Israel) when Joseph shared his dream with his family.

Dreams as Divine Communication:Dreams played a significant role in the Bible as a means of divine communication. In Joseph’s case, God used dreams to reveal His plan for Joseph’s future. These dreams were a foreshadowing of Joseph’s rise to power and influence.

Family Dynamics:The verse highlights the tension within Joseph’s family. The brothers’ jealousy is evident as they hear about the dream, which implies that Joseph would have authority over them. Jacob’s rebuke to Joseph indicates his scepticism about the dream and perhaps a concern about its implications for family dynamics.

Foreshadowing Future Events:The dream described in Genesis 37:10 is symbolic and prophetic. It foreshadows Joseph’s rise to power and his family’s eventual bowing down to him during a time of great need. While the dream may have seemed far-fetched at the time, it ultimately came true when Joseph became a high-ranking official in Egypt and his brothers sought his help during a famine.

God’s Sovereign Plan:The dreams that Joseph had were part of God’s sovereign plan for Joseph’s life and the nation of Israel. They served as a reminder that God was orchestrating events behind the scenes, working out His purposes even in the midst of difficult circumstances. Joseph’s journey from being sold into slavery by his brothers to becoming a ruler in Egypt was a testament to God’s faithfulness and His ability to bring about good even from challenging situations.

Lessons on Humility and God’s Timing:While Joseph’s dreams were a divine revelation, it is important to note that the fulfilment of those dreams required patience and humility on Joseph’s part. His journey involved many trials and setbacks, but he remained faithful to God. The dream’s fulfilment also took years to come to pass, highlighting the importance of trusting in God’s timing rather than trying to manipulate or force events to align with our desires.

Overall, Genesis 37:10 provides insight into the dynamics within Joseph’s family and serves as a foreshadowing of future events in Joseph’s life. It emphasises God’s sovereignty, the use of dreams as a means of divine communication, and the importance of patience and humility while trusting in God’s timing.
