“And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.”
This verse is part of the narrative of Joseph, one of the twelve sons of Jacob (also known as Israel). It highlights the strained relationship between Joseph and his brothers, stemming from their envy towards him.
Context:Genesis 37 provides the account of Joseph’s dreams and his interaction with his brothers. Joseph was his father’s favourite son, which caused jealousy and resentment among his brothers. To make matters worse, Joseph shared two dreams with his family, where he saw himself in positions of authority, symbolized by sheaves of wheat and celestial bodies. These dreams further fuelled his brothers’ envy.
Envy and Its Consequences:The verse states, “And his brethren envied him.” Envy is a powerful emotion that arises when someone desires what another person possesses, be it material possessions, abilities, or even favour. In Joseph’s case, his brothers envied the affection their father showed him. Envy often leads to negative consequences, as we see in the subsequent events of Joseph’s life, where his brothers’ jealousy eventually drives them to plot against him.
Observing the Saying:The latter part of the verse states, “but his father observed the saying.” Here, “the saying” refers to Joseph’s dreams. While his brothers were consumed by envy and dismissed the dreams, Joseph’s father, Jacob, pondered over them. By “observing” the saying, Jacob took note of these dreams and the implications they held. This observation highlights the significance of the dreams in the unfolding of Joseph’s story.

God’s plans for Joseph ultimately brought about reconciliation and redemption for his family.
