Genesis 39:9

Posted on 31 July 2023
Listen to this article

There is none greater in this house then I: neither hath hee kept backe any thing from me, but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I doe this great wickednesse, and sinne against God? Genesis 39:9 (KJV)

Context: Joseph, a young Hebrew slave, had been purchased by Potiphar, an Egyptian officer, and had risen to a position of authority in Potiphar’s household. In this vulnerable setting, Potiphar’s wife attempted to seduce him. Joseph refused, declaring that the proposed act would be a great wickedness and a sin against God.

Integrity and Responsibility: Joseph’s response reveals remarkable integrity and a deep sense of responsibility. Though far from his family and serving as a slave, he remained faithful to moral principles and recognized that yielding to the temptation would betray his master’s trust as well as violate God’s law.

Fear of God: His primary motivation was the fear of God. Joseph understood that God is the ultimate authority, and committing such an act would constitute a sin against Him. This reverence for God shaped his commitment to righteousness.

Personal Convictions: Joseph’s decision was rooted in personal convictions. He valued his relationship with God and sought to honor Him in every aspect of his life. The passage highlights his strong moral character and unwavering dedication to God’s commandments.

Application: Genesis 39:9 serves as a powerful reminder to maintain personal integrity and resist temptation, even when circumstances are difficult. Joseph’s example teaches that strength to overcome sin is found when we prioritize our relationship with God and keep Him foremost in our hearts.

God’s Faithfulness: The verse also demonstrates God’s faithfulness to those who remain loyal. Despite Joseph’s unjust situation, God continued to bless and guide him, eventually elevating him to a position of great authority in Egypt.

Conclusion: This pivotal moment in Joseph’s life encourages believers to prioritize their relationship with God, uphold moral convictions, and trust in His faithfulness, especially when faced with challenging situations.
