Genesis 39:17

Posted on 31 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me.”

Context:Genesis 39 tells the story of Joseph, the favoured son of Jacob, who was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers. Joseph was taken to Egypt and eventually became a trusted servant in the household of Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh. Potiphar’s wife attempted to seduce Joseph, but he resisted her advances. This verse is part of the account of Potiphar’s wife falsely accusing Joseph of wrongdoing.

Key Points and Lessons from Genesis 39:17:

  • Fidelity and integrity in the face of temptation:Despite being far from home and facing a powerful temptation, Joseph remained faithful to God and honourable in his actions. He resisted Potiphar’s wife’s advances, refusing to betray his master or sin against God. This demonstrates the importance of maintaining our integrity and moral standards even in challenging circumstances.
  • False accusations:Potiphar’s wife falsely accused Joseph of inappropriate behaviour out of anger and revenge when he rejected her advances. This incident highlights the reality that sometimes innocent people face false accusations and the consequences of unjust actions. It reminds us to be cautious and discerning, not hastily believing accusations without evidence or a fair investigation.
  • The consequences of speaking the truth:Joseph’s decision to stand firm in his integrity and truthfulness came at a cost. His refusal to give in to temptation and his commitment to righteousness led to false accusations and his subsequent imprisonment. However, God’s favour and providence were with Joseph throughout his trials and eventually led to his exaltation.
  • God’s presence in difficult circumstances:Throughout Joseph’s journey, we see God’s hand at work even in the midst of adversity. Although Joseph was sold into slavery and wrongly imprisoned, God was with him and blessed him. It is a reminder that even in our darkest moments, God can turn them around for our good and fulfil His purposes.
  • Joseph as a foreshadowing of Christ:Joseph’s faithfulness in the face of temptation, his unjust suffering, and his eventual exaltation serve as a foreshadowing of the life of Jesus Christ. Jesus, too, faced false accusations, suffered unjustly, and ultimately triumphed over adversity. Joseph’s story points to the redemptive work of Christ and His ultimate victory over sin and death.

Application:The story of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife provides several valuable lessons for our lives today. We are called to maintain integrity and resist temptation, even when it is challenging. We should be cautious about spreading false accusations or hastily believing them, recognising the potential harm they can cause. Additionally, this account encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness and presence during difficult times, knowing that He can work all things together for our good. Finally, we are reminded of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, who faced injustice and suffering on our behalf and offers us forgiveness and salvation.

As you meditate on Genesis 39:17 and the broader story of Joseph, may it inspire you to live a life of integrity, trust in God’s faithfulness, and find hope in the ultimate victory of Jesus Christ.
