Genesis 39:21

Listen to this article

"But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison."

Genesis 39:21 is part of the larger narrative of Joseph’s life. In this particular verse, Joseph has been falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife of attempting to seduce her. As a result, Joseph is thrown into prison. Despite his unjust circumstances, the verse highlights the presence of the Lord with Joseph and how God continues to bless him even in the midst of adversity.

God’s Presence:The verse begins by acknowledging that the Lord was with Joseph. Throughout Joseph’s life, from his time as a favoured son to his enslavement and imprisonment, God’s presence remains constant. This reassurance teaches us that even in difficult times, God does not abandon His faithful followers. God’s presence provides comfort, guidance, and strength in the face of adversity.

God’s Mercy:The verse also emphasises that God showed Joseph mercy. Despite the false accusation, God recognised Joseph’s innocence and extended His mercy towards him. This act of mercy reminds us that God is just and fair, and He knows the truth even when others may falsely accuse us. God’s mercy is a demonstration of His compassion and willingness to forgive.

God’s Favour:In addition to showing mercy, God also granted Joseph favour in the sight of the prison keeper. This favour implies that Joseph gained respect, trust, and possibly privileges while in prison. It is important to note that Joseph’s favour was not based on his own merit or abilities alone but was bestowed upon him by God. This favour was crucial in enabling Joseph to thrive even in the challenging environment of the prison.

Lessons from Genesis 39:21:

  • Trust in God’s presence:Like Joseph, we should trust that God is with us, even in the most difficult circumstances. He will provide us with the strength and guidance we need to navigate through challenges.
  • Seek God’s mercy:Joseph’s story reminds us to seek God’s mercy when we face false accusations or unjust situations. By acknowledging our need for His mercy, we open ourselves up to His grace and forgiveness.
  • Rely on God’s favour:The favour Joseph received in the prison illustrates that God can turn unfavourable situations around for our good. When we trust in God and remain faithful to Him, He can open doors and provide opportunities beyond our expectations.
  • Remain faithful in adversity:Joseph’s story showcases his unwavering faith and trust in God, even when circumstances were stacked against him. It serves as a reminder that our faithfulness to God should not waver, regardless of the trials we face.

Overall, Genesis 39:21 teaches us that God’s presence, mercy, and favour are not dependent on our circumstances. He remains faithful to His followers and can bless them even in the midst of challenging situations.
