Genesis 41:36

Posted on 31 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.”

This verse is part of the narrative of Joseph’s rise to power in Egypt and his interpretation of Pharaoh’s dreams. In this particular verse, Joseph is providing Pharaoh with a plan to prepare for an upcoming period of severe famine.

To understand the context of this verse, we need to go back to Genesis 41:1-32. Pharaoh had two disturbing dreams that troubled him, and none of his wise men and magicians could interpret their meaning. At this point, the cupbearer, who had been imprisoned with Joseph, remembered that Joseph had interpreted his dream accurately in the past. Joseph was summoned before Pharaoh to interpret his dreams.

Joseph explained to Pharaoh that his dreams were a warning from God about seven years of abundance to be followed by seven years of severe famine in the land of Egypt. He advised Pharaoh to appoint someone wise and discerning to oversee the collection and storage of surplus grain during the years of plenty. This stored food would then sustain the people during the famine, ensuring their survival and preventing the land from perishing.

This verse highlights Joseph’s wisdom and foresight, guided by God’s revelation, in providing a practical solution to prepare for the impending crisis. By storing food during the years of abundance, they could avoid starvation and maintain the stability and prosperity of the land, even during the years of scarcity.

This passage teaches several important lessons:

  • Wisdom and discernment:Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams and provide practical solutions demonstrates the importance of wisdom and discernment. It reminds us that seeking God’s guidance and relying on His wisdom can help us navigate challenging situations.
  • Preparation:Joseph’s plan emphasizes the value of preparation. The seven years of abundance were an opportunity to store up resources for the upcoming famine. This principle applies not only to physical provisions but also to spiritual and emotional preparedness for the challenges we may face in life.
  • Trusting in God’s provision:Throughout this story, we see God’s hand at work. Joseph’s interpretation of the dreams was a result of God’s revelation, and his subsequent rise to power was orchestrated by God’s providence. It serves as a reminder that we can trust in God’s provision and guidance, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
  • Stewardship:Joseph’s plan demonstrates good stewardship of resources. By managing the surplus during times of abundance, they ensured that the food would be available to sustain the people during times of need. This principle encourages us to be responsible stewards of the resources and blessings entrusted to us.

Overall, Genesis 41:36 showcases Joseph’s wisdom, God’s guidance, and the importance of preparation and stewardship. It teaches us valuable lessons about seeking God’s wisdom, being prepared for challenges, trusting in His provision, and being responsible stewards of what He has given us.
