Genesis 41:39

Posted on 31 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art.”

Context:In this verse, we find Joseph, who had been sold into slavery by his brothers and was now serving as a slave in Egypt. Through a series of events, Joseph had interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams and revealed that there would be seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. Impressed by Joseph’s wisdom and discernment, Pharaoh acknowledges the role of God in Joseph’s life and recognises his unique abilities.

God’s Guidance:Pharaoh acknowledges that it is God who has shown Joseph the interpretation of the dreams. This verse highlights the important truth that God is the source of wisdom and insight. Throughout the Bible, we see examples of God granting wisdom to individuals who seek Him and trust in Him. Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams was a gift from God and demonstrated God’s providential care over his life.

Discretion and Wisdom:Pharaoh recognises Joseph’s exceptional qualities, describing him as “none so discreet and wise as thou art.” Joseph’s wisdom and discretion were evident in his interpretation of the dreams and his subsequent plan to prepare Egypt for the upcoming famine. This verse reminds us that God’s wisdom is not limited to spiritual matters but also extends to practical areas of life. Joseph’s wisdom enabled him to make sound judgments and take appropriate action.

God’s Sovereignty:Pharaoh’s acknowledgment of Joseph’s wisdom is a testament to God’s sovereignty. It was God who orchestrated the events in Joseph’s life, leading him from being a slave to becoming a trusted advisor to Pharaoh. Through Joseph’s position of authority, God would ultimately save not only Egypt but also Joseph’s own family during the severe famine.

Application:As we reflect on this verse, we can draw some practical lessons for our own lives. First, we should recognise that God is the source of all wisdom. When we seek His guidance and rely on Him, He will provide us with the discernment we need to make wise decisions. Second, we should strive to develop qualities such as discretion and wisdom. These qualities are highly valued and can have a positive impact on our relationships and responsibilities. Finally, we should trust in God’s sovereignty. Even in difficult circumstances, God can use our experiences to fulfill His purposes and bring about good.

In conclusion, Genesis 41:39 reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s guidance, developing wisdom and discretion, and trusting in His sovereignty. It encourages us to rely on God’s wisdom in all aspects of our lives and to recognise His hand in our journey, just as Pharaoh recognised the wisdom and guidance God had bestowed upon Joseph.
